ISO 14001 Clause 8
Where the planning work in Clauses 4, 5 and 6 turns into day-to-day operational reality.
ISO 14001 Clause 8 - Operation
Clause 8 of ISO 14001:2026 is where the planning work in Clauses 4, 5 and 6 turns into day-to-day operational reality. It has two sub-clauses - operational planning and control, and emergency preparedness and response. Together they cover what the organisation does to keep environmental impacts under control during normal operation and to respond effectively if something goes wrong.
ISO 14001 Clause 8.1 - Operational Planning and Control
The organisation establishes operating criteria for the processes that affect the environment and implements controls to keep those processes within the criteria. The 2026 edition broadens the previous wording about outsourced processes to cover externally provided processes, products and services - bringing the standard into line with how procurement actually works in most organisations.
For more on this clause see ISO 14001 Clause 8.1 - Operational Planning and Control.
ISO 14001 Clause 8.2 - Emergency Preparedness and Response
The organisation establishes processes to prepare for and respond to potential emergency situations identified at Clause 6.1.2. This includes planning response actions, periodic testing, training, and revising the response process after incidents or tests.
For more on this clause see ISO 14001 Clause 8.2 - Emergency Preparedness and Response.
