Driving and Deliveries Risk Assessment
This fully completed driving and deliveries risk assessment example has been prepared by a qualified health and safety professional. It covers a typical range of hazards, risks and associated control measures for all work-related driving activities including deliveries, site visits and customer calls and can be used as a starting point when developing your own risk assessment documentation.
What Does This Driving and Deliveries Risk Assessment Cover?
This risk assessment identifies the key hazards associated with driving and deliveries including;
- Road traffic collision — involvement in a road traffic collision while driving for work causing fatal or serious injury to the driver, passengers and other road users
- Driver fatigue — tiredness and microsleep causing loss of vehicle control and serious or fatal collision, particularly on long-distance or shift-pattern driving
- Vehicle defects — use of a defective vehicle with failed brakes, tyres, lights or steering creating loss of control risk
- Adverse weather and road conditions — driving in rain, ice, fog or snow reducing visibility and grip, significantly increasing collision risk
- Loading and unloading at delivery points — manual handling of deliveries and vehicular hazards during loading and unloading operations
Each hazard includes an inherent risk rating ranging from Moderate to Substantial, and a comprehensive listing of applicable control measures covering areas such as;
- Valid driving licence checked before authorisation; seatbelts worn; mobile phones not used while driving
- Journey planning with rest breaks for journeys over 2 hours; fatigue policy communicated and enforced
- Maximum daily driving hours enforced; minimum 15-minute break every 2 hours
- Pre-use vehicle checks; planned preventive maintenance; valid MOT, tax and insurance
- Weather forecasts checked before long journeys; non-essential journeys postponed in severe conditions
A residual risk rating is then assigned to each hazard, demonstrating how effective risk management reduces overall risk to a tolerable level.
A Professional, Easy-to-Use Risk Assessment Template
This document uses colour-coded header styles matched to risk ratings, making it quick to read and easy to communicate during toolbox talks and worker training. A built-in risk rating matrix supports consistent evaluation of likelihood and consequence, and hazard pictograms using internationally recognised ISO warning symbols are included alongside relevant hazard entries — improving clarity and helping to highlight risks and mandatory controls.
The result is a completed risk assessment that looks professional, reads clearly, and demonstrates a structured and effective approach to risk management.
Who Is This Risk Assessment Template Suitable For?
This driving and deliveries risk assessment template is suitable for health and safety advisers, fleet managers, transport supervisors and any employer with a duty to assess risks associated with work-related driving. It can be implemented as a standalone document or as part of a broader occupational health and safety management system aligned with ISO 45001.
