Farming Activities Risk Assessment
This fully completed farming activities risk assessment example has been prepared by a qualified health and safety professional. It covers a typical range of hazards, risks and associated control measures for all agricultural and farming activities including crop production, livestock management, machinery operation, pesticide use and farm building maintenance and can be used as a starting point when developing your own risk assessment documentation.
What Does This Farming Activities Risk Assessment Cover?
This risk assessment identifies the key hazards associated with farming activities including;
- Agricultural machinery contact — contact with moving parts of tractors, combine harvesters, balers, mowers and other agricultural machinery causing entanglement, crush and cutting injuries
- Tractor and vehicle overturning — overturning of tractors on slopes, near ditches or embankments causing fatal crush injuries to the operator
- Livestock handling injuries — being kicked, crushed, trampled or gored by cattle, horses, pigs or other livestock during handling, feeding or veterinary procedures
- Pesticide and agrochemical exposure — skin contact, inhalation or ingestion of pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and fertilisers causing poisoning, respiratory illness and dermatitis
Each hazard includes an inherent risk rating of Substantial, and a comprehensive listing of applicable control measures covering areas such as;
- All guards fitted before operating machinery; Power Take Off (PTO) guards in place at all times; machinery isolated before clearing blockages
- Only trained, competent operators on agricultural machinery; loose clothing and long hair not worn near machinery
- All tractors fitted with certified Rollover Protective Structure (ROPS) and seatbelt; slope working assessed against safe limits
- Handling facilities designed to minimise contact; races, crushes and head yokes used; escape routes identified before entering livestock areas
- COSHH assessments for all pesticides and agrochemicals; appropriate PPE including gloves, RPE and coveralls
A residual risk rating is then assigned to each hazard, demonstrating how effective risk management reduces overall risk to a tolerable level.
A Professional, Easy-to-Use Risk Assessment Template
This document uses colour-coded header styles matched to risk ratings, making it quick to read and easy to communicate during toolbox talks and worker training. A built-in risk rating matrix supports consistent evaluation of likelihood and consequence, and hazard pictograms using internationally recognised ISO warning symbols are included alongside relevant hazard entries — improving clarity and helping to highlight risks and mandatory controls.
The result is a completed risk assessment that looks professional, reads clearly, and demonstrates a structured and effective approach to risk management.
Who Is This Risk Assessment Template Suitable For?
This farming activities risk assessment template is suitable for health and safety advisers, farm managers, agricultural contractors and any employer with a duty to assess risks associated with farming and agricultural operations. It can be implemented as a standalone document or as part of a broader occupational health and safety management system aligned with ISO 45001.
