Band Saw Operations Risk Assessment

This fully completed band saw operations risk assessment example has been prepared by a qualified health and safety professional. It covers operation of vertical and horizontal band saws for cutting wood, metal and plastics in workshop environments, and can be used as a starting point when developing your own risk assessment documentation.

What Does This Band Saw Risk Assessment Cover?

This risk assessment identifies the key hazards associated with band saw operations including;
  • Contact with moving band saw blade — fingers or hands contacting the running blade causing severe lacerations and amputations
  • Blade breakage and ejection — band saw blade fracturing and being ejected at speed causing penetrating injuries to operator and bystanders
  • Workpiece kickback — workpiece snatched back by the blade causing hand and arm injuries
  • Dust and fumes from cutting — fine wood dust and fumes causing respiratory disease including occupational asthma and lung cancer
  • Noise from band saw — motor and cutting noise causing hearing damage with prolonged use

Each hazard includes an inherent risk rating ranging from Moderate to Substantial, and a comprehensive listing of applicable control measures covering areas such as;

  • Upper blade guard adjusted to within 3mm of the workpiece and never removed during operation
  • Push sticks used for feeding material with hands kept at least 150mm from the blade
  • Pre-use blade inspection for cracks, kinks and missing teeth with defective blades replaced immediately
  • Dust extraction connected and running with H-class vacuum for hardwood and MDF
  • FFP2 minimum RPE for softwood and FFP3 for hardwood and MDF
  • Noise levels measured with hearing protection worn above 80 dB and health surveillance provided

A residual risk rating is then assigned to each hazard, demonstrating how effective risk management reduces overall risk to a tolerable level.

A Professional, Easy-to-Use Risk Assessment Template

This document uses colour-coded header styles matched to risk ratings, making it quick to read and easy to communicate during toolbox talks and worker training. A built-in risk rating matrix supports consistent evaluation of likelihood and consequence, and hazard pictograms using internationally recognised ISO warning symbols are included alongside relevant hazard entries.
The result is a completed risk assessment that looks professional, reads clearly, and demonstrates a structured and effective approach to risk management.

Who Is This Risk Assessment Template Suitable For?

This band saw risk assessment template is suitable for health and safety advisers, workshop managers, woodworking supervisors and any employer with a duty to assess risks associated with band saw use under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) and the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH). It can be implemented as a standalone document or as part of a broader occupational health and safety management system aligned with ISO 45001.

Note: This example risk assessment is supplied for use as guidance only and should be reviewed and completed by a competent person.
