COSHH Assessment — MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard — Wood Dust / Formaldehyde)

This pre-completed COSHH assessment covers MDF (medium density fibreboard) — wood fibres bonded with urea-formaldehyde resin. MDF presents two distinct carcinogenic hazards when machined: wood dust (Group 1 carcinogen for hardwood; respiratory sensitiser) and formaldehyde released during cutting and sanding (Group 1 carcinogen). LEV is mandatory at all cutting and sanding operations.

What Does This COSHH Assessment Cover?

The assessment is fully completed and ready to use, covering all sections required for a complete hazardous substance risk assessment:

  • Substance identification — trade name (MDF / Medium Density Fibreboard), chemical name (wood fibres with urea-formaldehyde resin binder), SDS reference and physical state
  • Health effects and first aid — inhalation of wood dust causing respiratory irritation, asthma and sino-nasal cancer; formaldehyde inhalation causing nasopharyngeal cancer and leukaemia; skin and eye irritation; specific first aid for each route
  • Dual carcinogen hazard — hardwood dust is a Group 1 carcinogen; formaldehyde is a Group 1 carcinogen; health surveillance required; LEV essential at all machining operations
  • Workplace exposure limits — wood dust TWA 5 mg/m³ (inhalable); hardwood dust TWA 3 mg/m³; formaldehyde TWA 2 ppm and STEL 2 ppm, from workplace exposure limits guidance
  • CLP hazard classification — Irritant and Long-term health hazard pictograms
  • PPE requirements — including FFP2/FFP3 respirator, LEV at source and eye protection during cutting and sanding
  • Emergency procedures — dust suppression and containment; do not dry sweep

Who Is This COSHH Assessment For?

This assessment is suitable for any workplace where MDF is machined, including:

  • Joinery and furniture manufacturing facilities
  • Kitchen and shopfitting installers
  • Construction and site carpentry operations
  • School and workshop technical education environments
